TIJ celebrates it’s 10th anniversary

This year, on June 13th, the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) celebrated its 10th anniversary. The ICPC is pleased to be among the TIJ’s collaborators. It is an institution that has been leading Thailand’s efforts in the field of criminal justice, reintegration, and the rule of law for the past 10 years, and is a fellow member of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network Institutes (PNI).

The ICPC invited to a conversation on urban security

On June 8th, the ICPC was invited by the European Forum for Urban Safety (Efus) and by the Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention (CMNCP) to take part in an informal conversation on urban safety. The main subjects discussed were each of the invited organizations challenges in the face of COVID-19, their on-going projects, and their up-coming events.

Among the attendees were the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), both ICPC members.

The ICPC joins the Traffik Analysis Hub

The ICPC was recently invited to join the Traffik Analysis Hub (TA Hub), which is aimed at global human trafficking prevention. It is a joint effort from across different sectors and industries, governments, and NGO partners, all committed to sharing data and knowledge in order to help the fight against human trafficking.

On May 28th, the ICPC took part in the Analyst monthly call, along with representatives from multiple partners of the TA Hub. At the meeting, some new features of the platform were presented, and some of the practical challenges were discussed as well as possible avenues to overcome them.

Winners of the DataJam Against Exploitation revealed

Friday June 4th, at the end of the DataJam Against Exploitation that brought together 75 participants of 16 different nationalities, the winning teams were announced. In first place came Buyer Resist from Vancouver who created a web app that helped track traffickers by comparing the text from escort agency adds across Canada. They will receive a monetary prize and a spot in the IBM Incubator Program to help them further develop their project. They will also be invited to participate in the DataJam Pasos Libres 2021 that will take place on a world-wide scale in the fall, and lastly, their project will be promoted by all the co-organizers of the DataJam Against Exploitation.

Team Scotiabank AMA from Toronto, 5 data scientists from Scotiabank Anti-Money Laundering Models and Analytics (AML), came in second place, and the third place went to CDL Team from Montreal and affiliated with Montreal Institute of Learning Algorithms (Mila). This event marked the official ending of the competition.

The ICPC attends a PNI meeting

The ICPC attended the UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network (PNI)’s 2021 spring coordination meeting. This opportunity allowed follow-up discussions on the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Japan and on the 30th Session of the Comission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

Among the attendees were the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS), the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI), the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), and the l’Instituto Latinoamericano de las Naciones Unidas para la Prevención del Delito y el Tratamiento del Delincuente (ILANUD), also members of the ICPC.

The ICPC participates in International Prison Innovation Week

On June 24th, the ICPC will be presenting as part of International Prison Innovation Week organised by the Coinserta network that promotes innovation in the prison ecosystem. From 10:45 to 11:15 EDT, the ICPC, who is a member of said network, will deliver a presentation on the prevention of radicalization of violence in conditional release. Among the other speakers there are the University of Birmigham, the Centre for Reintegration Initiatives (CIRE) of the Catalonian Department of Justice, the University of Barcelona, the Norwegian Correctional Service, the Chilean Gendarmerie, the University of Belfast and the University of Glasgow.

The ICPC organizes a focus group of local Saint-Laurent stakeholders

The ICPC met with various community and institutional key actors working in the Saint-Laurent neighbourhood as part of the process leading up to a local safety audit.

This focus group’s goal was to better contextualize local realities, to identify the more at-risk parties, and to shed light on emerging problems that might not have been brought up in literature reviews or statistics. Speaking with local actors provides us with a more accurate view of local crime issues.

The local safety audit will be finished in June 2021.

The ICPC welcomes two new communications interns

At the end of the month of May, it was our pleasure to welcome two new communications interns to the ICPC: Miriam Blair and Adriana Gonzalez.

Miriam is finishing her bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Modern Languages at Laval University with a focus on communications. She is interested in furthering international cooperation on crime that transcends borders, especially human trafficking.

Adriana is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Public Relations at the University of Quebec in Montreal. She is particularly interested in the development of communication strategies within public organizations.

They will be working together with our Communications Manager to develop the ICPC’s communications strategies in crime prevention and to bring you more news from us across all our platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube). Welcome to our team!

The ICPC presents the “DataJam Against Exploitation” as a means of preventing human trafficking

On the 21st of May at The Cybersecurity Revolution 2021 event (SECREV) hosted by SERENE-RISC, the ICPC participated in a conference on cybersecurity with the Fundación Pasos Libres. They presented the DataJam Against Exploitation 2021 as a technological innovation and a means of prevention against human trafficking.

SECREV is a free annual online event who’s goal is to facilitate the international exchange of information on cybersecurity.
